Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marcel Sabitzer has fired the Austrian national team to a 1-0 away victory in Azerbaijan. Sabitzer was brought on as a substitute at the break and scored the winning goal from the penalty spot a short while later.
That means the Austrians have been prematurely confirmed as participants in the 2024 European Championship finals in Germany. Sabitzer, who only made his comeback from a muscle injury in the international against Belgium last Friday, scored a goal from the penalty spot for the second game in a row – both as a substitute.
Two other Borussia players were in the starting line-ups for their national teams on Monday evening. Ramy Bensebaini played for Algeria in a friendly against Egypt (1-1) and completed the full 90 minutes at the heart of defence. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens began for the England U21s in their EURO qualifying match against Ukraine. The 19-year-old came off after 58 minutes, with England ultimately slipping to a surprise 3-2 defeat in Kosice, Slovakia.
