Goalkeeper Alexander Meyer has been a Black & Yellow for a year now. Now the 32-year-old has signed a contract extension to remain at BVB until the summer of 2025. Time for us to sit down with him for an interview and take a look back at his first year in Dortmund.
Alex, after one year at BVB, why are you saying “Yes, I’d like to sign a new contract”?
“I felt super comfortable right from the start and was given a super welcome. Every day it was a pleasure to know that I was now playing for Borussia Dortmund. It was a very nice season with many great moments for me personally. But we also matured enormously as a team. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to win the title in the end, but all in all, the first year went by very quickly. Now I’m happy to continue on this path.”
What moments of the season have a particularly dear place in your memory?
“For me personally, of course, my first game in the Champions League against Copenhagen, my first games in the Bundesliga and also the season finale. You could tell that not only we as a team, but the whole club really came together, everyone was focused on the same goal and a lot of good things came out of it. That will be important in the coming months.”
You mentioned the last day of the season. What are you taking from it?
“It was a unique experience, not only for me, but also for a lot of other players. Just what was going on outside the stadium, driving into the stadium, warming up, the fans in the stadium – you could feel every emotion during the day. Unfortunately, also the one after the game. That was something you needed time to process. The break, which was relatively long, did us good in recovering from it. But we can also draw a lot from it, especially motivation. How it went in the end will be a part of us from now on. Now we want to take it on together again and turn things around in the other direction.”
What do the club and the people of Dortmund give you?
“Every day I am thankful that I can play for such a big club and that I can do my part. I will give my all for this club every day. When you see what happened here in the city on the last match day, all the buzz around it – you just want to give something back to the fans.”
How do you feel your role as back-up goalkeeper is appreciated by the fans here?
“I know my role and what I’m getting into here. Nevertheless, I always try to give it my all. I have a good relationship with Gregor [Kobel], I try to support him and I want to be there when something happens. Then I want to show that I can be relied on. With the fans, of course, everything here has a completely different scope than at my previous clubs, but that’s something I enjoy, especially when you see that no matter where we are, the Dortmund fans are also there with us. That makes you proud.”
And finally what are your hopes for the coming season?
“First and foremost, of course, I want to stay injury-free. And beyond that, the big goal remains to bring a title to Dortmund. Then celebrate with the people here at the end of the season.”
