Borussia Dortmund U17 players Almuger Kabar, Paris Brunner, Charles Herrmann and Kjell Wätjen are European champions! They were part of the Germany U17 national team that beat France 5-4 on penalties in the EURO final in Budapest. Normal time had ended 0-0.
It is the first time since 2009 that a Germany U17 team has won the EURO title. “A great performance by the boys. They’ve had a fantastic tournament,” beamed ecstatic coach Christian Wück. Charles Herrmann and Paris Brunner comfortably converted their spot-kicks in the shootout and made a decisive contribution to the victory.
Christian Wück’s team, which had already beaten reigning champions France 3-1 in the group stages, produced a hard-running and combative display in an intense and even match. Borussia’s youngsters were among the standout players: Paris Brunner, together with Bayern’s Robert Ramsak, was the top scorer at the tournament (both four goals) and consistently posed a goal threat, while Almugera Kabar kept things tight on the left flank and Charles Herrmann was involved in some lovely play down the right wing in the first half in particular. Kjell Wätjen was an unused substitute. (wiwi)
