In an unbelievably exciting group in which each of the four clubs could yet finish first or last, BVB will be away to AC Milan on Tuesday evening (21:00 CET) and will have one of two match-points in this game. The facts preview.

The scenario

  • Only three points separate the teams in places one to four: Borussia Dortmund top the Group F standings with seven points ahead of Paris Saint-Germain (6), AC Milan (5) and Newcastle United (4).
  • The Black & Yellows have two match points as they bid to qualify for the UEFA Champions League last 16. They would be sure of second place with a victory in Milan on Tuesday, as they would (even with a loss in Milan) if they beat PSG on the final matchday.
  • Borussia Dortmund have won their last two matches in the group, while Milan achieved their first triumph at the fourth attempt by beating PSG 2-1.
  • The reverse fixture between the two teams ended 0-0 on Matchday 2.

History

  • It is the eighth meeting between the two clubs in European competition. The first two matches occurred 66 years ago – a 1-1 draw (home) and a 4-1 defeat (away) in the quarter-finals of the European Champions Cup. At the beginning of the century, there was a 4-0 win (home) and a 3-1 loss (away) for Dortmund in the semi-final of the UEFA Cup (season 2001/2002) and a 1-0 loss (home) and 1-0 win (away) in the UEFA Champions League second group phase (2002/2003 season).
  • On their last four visits to the Guiseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan, which AC Milan share with Inter Milan, BVB have registered one victory, one draw and two defeats.

AC Milan facts

  • Milan have not won any of their last three home games against teams from the Bundesliga, but they also have not lost to German opposition on home turf since a 1-0 defeat to BVB back in March 2003.
  • This defeat against Borussia Dortmund is the only home loss against a club from Germany since 1955. Of the other 16 home games, 12 ended in victory (four draws).
  • Milan are taking part in the UEFA Champions League for the third season in a row and the 20th time overall. The club have won the European Champions Cup or the UEFA Champions League seven times.
  • AC Milan are the only Italian club who have won the UEFA Champions League on more than one occasion (1994, 2003 and 2007).

Borussia Dortmund facts

  • The Bundesliga runners-up from last season are represented in the group phase for the 18th time in total and the eighth season in succession.
  • Since the 2012/13 campaign, BVB have only failed to get through the group twice. (br)
