The Borussia Dortmund women followed up their 7-0 triumph against SC Borchen in the Westfalenpokal with a 5-0 defeat in their friendly against the 1. FC Köln U20s on Sunday. Head coach Thomas Sulewski’s team battled energetically against the Regionalliga outfit’s attacking play but ultimately still succumbed to defeat.
“It was a good friendly against a very strong opponent. We already knew before the game that we would have little possession and that we would have to concentrate on defending,” remarked Sulewski after the match. However, the coach was delighted with the tenacity and tough tackling from his team. The Black & Yellows kept the game at 0-0 until the 24th minute of the match, before Olesja Arslan mercilessly punished an error in BVB’s build-up play and fired the visitors in front. Sabrina Grundmann upped the advantage to 2-0 following a corner 10 minutes later (34). Antonia Langshausen (41) and Arslan (45) then made it 4-0 before the break.
After the break Virginia Glänzer replaced Ana Haslsteiner, who was brought on again as a substitute to replace Lisa Sophie Gomulka later in the game. Nora Rechenbach turned a Köln corner into her own net shortly after the interval (52). The scoreline then stayed 5-0 for the rest of the match.
“Köln made us and the ball do the work very well. We held our own as well as we could. However, a clear difference in quality could ultimately be seen between the Landesliga and the Regionalliga. Nonetheless, we can draw several conclusions from the game,” said a not dissatisfied Sulewski.
The BVB women have more friendlies on the agenda next week. The Black & Yellows will go up against Wacker Innsbruck and TSV 1860 Munich as part of their training camp in the Kitzbühel Alps.
