They will return to Germany on Saturday, with the City of Dortmund to hold a grand reception at Bodelschwingh Castle on Sunday. But prior to that, the BVB women’s handballers also won the third friendly of their training camp in Denmark. Following the victories against Ringkøbing Håndbold (32-24) and Aarhus United (24-23), the Borussia ladies ran out 33-29 (20-16) winners away to Horsens HK on Thursday evening.
“We always have different challenges in these matches. But overall, we’ve properly implemented everything. I’d like to emphasise: the result doesn’t matter to me in these games. That’s also why we completely rang the changes without taking heed of the result. We have a balanced squad. All the players featured,” said BVB coach Henk Groener, who was entirely satisfied with the performance levels four weeks ahead of the Bundesliga start against VfL Oldenburg on 9 September.
In contrast to the games at the start of the week, which were played at BVB’s training base in Skærbæk on the North Sea, the BVB squad boarded the Team Bus for Horsens on the east coast on Thursday evening. “That was our third game in four days. Like Aarhus, Horsens are an ambitious mid-table club in the league behind the three top teams Esbjerg, Odense and Ikast. We scored 33 goals again, the goalkeepers Sarah Wachter and Tess Lieder were really good again and the tempo in attack was high,” explained Groener. The Dutchman also used the friendlies in Scandinavia to form a new-look defence with the summer signings Alicia Stolle, Lena Degenhardt and Carmen Campos. “We still need to work on coordination and communication in defence,” Groener said.
Only at the start of the match did the Dortmund ladies briefly fall behind, but they quickly found their way back into the game and took in a 20-16 lead at the break. And that four-goal advantage remained intact at the final whistle, with BVB winning their third game in Denmark by a 33-29 scoreline. The top goalscorers against Horsens were Lisa Antl (6), Lena Degenhardt (5) and Zoë Sprengers (5).
