February: Fans finally return to the stadium

Year in review 2022, Part two

An emotional 12 months full of highs and lows are drawing to a close. As we enter the last few weeks of the year, FC Augsburg are looking back on the last 365 days. In the second part of our series, we look at February.

The first game in February coincided with the long-awaited return of fans in the stadium, with 7,600 spectators allowed into the WWK ARENA once again to watch the home game against Union Berlin.

With the fans right behind them, FCA were also able to claim their first win of the year. Michael Gregoritsch continued a fine run of three goals in four games in the New Year, scoring after a quarter of an hour to make it 1-0. But it was André Hahn’s goal from range which was the highlight of the game to give Augsburg a 2-0 win.

What came next put a dampener on the mood, as, despite scoring twice, FC Augsburg succumbed to a narrow 3-2 defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Iago pulled the score back to 2-1 with his first goal of the season, while substitute Alfred Finnbogason struck late on to give Augsburg renewed hope, but it was too late to avoid defeat.

Sarenren Bazee secures a point against Dortmund

FC Augsburg came away with nothing from their next game against SC Freiburg, falling to a 2-1 home defeat. Despite Gregoritsch equalising with his sixth goal of the season, FCA were unable to get anything out of the game. FCA head coach Markus Weinzierl, who had tested positive for Coronavirus, was forced to follow the game from home.

A week later was another home game, with the team taking on Borussia Dortmund in front of 15,330 fans. Dortmund, who went into the game second in the league, took the lead after 35 minutes. FCA searched for an equaliser, being rewarded in the 78th minute, as substitute Noah Sarenren Bazee scored a header from close range to secure a point. This was the eighth time a substitute had come on and scored for FCA that season.

FCA auction warm-up shirts in support of Ukraine

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the FC Augsburg team wore blue and yellow warm-up shirts prior to the game against Dortmund in order to make clear their support for peace. The shirts featured a dove of peace and the text ‘Friedensstadt Augsburg’.

These shirts had a limited production run and were not available to buy – instead, FCA auctioned off 16 signed shirts, with the proceeds donated towards those suffering due to the conflict in Ukraine. As well as the warm-up shirts, the team also played with Ukrainian flags on their shirts for the game against Dortmund.
