Dahmen: “Mainly just frustrated right now”

Reaction from the 1-1 draw away against Union Berlin

FC Augsburg drew 1-1 for the third successive game on Saturday as they shared the points away against 1. FC Union Berlin. Goalkeeper Finn Dahmen impressed with his penalty save and spoke to us after the game – here are all the important quotes.

Niklas Dorsch: “It was a chaotic game, but that’s effectively what the coach told us it would be. We controlled possession a lot in the first half and deserved to take the lead. However, unlike in recent weeks, we didn’t start the second half well, which we’ll need to analyse. Nevertheless, we kept them at bay for a long time and we’ve become a team known for being tough to play against. We want to keep proving that we are in our upcoming matches.”

Finn Dahmen: “I’m obviously pleased that I saved the penalty, however I’m mainly just frustrated right now. You obviously want to win the game when you’re ahead for that long. The point at least preserved our unbeaten run, but our second-half performance wasn’t good. The coach is giving us confidence to deal with both good and bad periods. I think that’s clear to see out on the pitch – we want to play with this belief against Frankfurt now too.”

Ermedin Demirović: “We’re annoyed that we lost all three points at the end of the game. We came so close to getting our first clean sheet of the season, which Finn Dahmen would have deserved after a great performance. We unfortunately failed to play like we did in the first half after the break, and that’s why we only got a point in the end.”

Jess Thorup (FC Augsburg coach): “It was a game of two halves today. We controlled the game and did well in possession in the first 45 minutes, which is why we deserved to lead 1-0. We wanted to continue like this after the break, but didn’t manage to. We lost the ball on too many occasions, couldn’t build up enough pressure and were too defensive. We’re disappointed to not have won the game, however we have to accept the draw in the end.”

Marco Grote (1. FC Union Berlin coach): “We started the game well, which isn’t a given after such a long winless run. Following that though, we struggled to gain control and the gaps between our players were too big. The team showed real desire, energy and belief in the second half, especially after the missed penalty. I believe we deserved to get the point in the end and could even have won the game.”
