Following victories over Makkabi Berlin and 1. FC Heidenheim in the DFB Cup and opening Bundesliga weekend respectively, VfL Wolfsburg are away to 1. FC Köln on Saturday 26 August (kick-off 15:30). Ahead of the fixture, Yannick Gerhardt spoke about the Wolves’ start to the season and the trip to Cologne.

Philipp off on loan to Freiburg

Forward Maximilian Philipp is leaving VfL Wolfsburg to join SC Freiburg – a club where he played his youth football. The Wolves have come to an agreement with SCF on a loan which will run until 30 June 2024.

VfL Wolfsburg finally returned to competitive action last Sunday, when they eased past Makkabi Berlin in the first round of the DFB Cup. Ahead of the Wolves’ Bundesliga opener against 1. FC Heidenheim on Saturday 19 August at the Volkswagen Arena (at 15:30 CEST), VfL sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz talked about his day-to-day work, the objectives for the season and the game against Heidenheim.

Loan to Darmstadt

VfL Wolfsburg have loaned Bartol Franjic to Bundesliga promoted side SV Darmstadt 98 for one year. The 23-year-old Croatian joined the Wolves from Dinamo Zagreb in summer 2022 but a number of injuries restricted him to just six appearances last season, including one in the DFB Cup. In order for the midfielder to gain more match experience, both parties have now opted for a loan deal within the Bundesliga.

1. FC Heidenheim step out at the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday (kick-off 15:30 CEST) for their first ever outing in the Bundesliga, but VfL Wolfsburg are actually their most-played opponents in another competition. FCH have faced VfL more times than any other club in the DFB Cup, with the two sides meeting three times – in the first round in 2008/09 and in the second round in the 2014/15 and 2016/17 seasons. The Green-and-Whites came out on top each time, and in most of the seasons when they’ve come up against Heidenheim, they’ve ended it with a trophy.

Home win in Bundesliga opener

Bundesliga football finally returned to the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday after an 84-day absence, as VfL Wolfsburg beat promoted side 1. FC Heidenheim 2-0 – thanks to a Jonas Wind double, and in front of 22,620 fans – to kick-off the 2023/24 campaign.

Lovro Majer joins from Rennes

VfL Wolfsburg have acquired Croatian international Lovro Majer from French Ligue 1 side Rennes, tying the attacking midfielder down to a long-term deal in the process. The 25-year-old has signed a five-year contract which will make him a Wolf through to 30 June 2028.

Routine victory

VfL Wolfsburg have won their first competitive game of the 2023/24 campaign, beating Makkabi Berlin 6-0 in the first round of the DFB Cup on Sunday afternoon. Tiago Tomas scored twice for Niko Kovac’s side (54’, 89’), while Lukas Nmecha (8’), Jonas Wind (9), Yannick Gerhardt (57’) and Ridle Baku (79’) were also on target in front of a capacity 5,000-crowd at the Mommsenstadion to send VfL through to the second round, which will take place on 31 October and 1 November.

Fan prediction game launches in VfL app

Anyone wanting to compete with Maximilian Arnold or Alexandra Popp will now have the chance to do so in 2023/24: the prediction game in the VfL Wolfsburg app, presented by our partner Beck’s, will be called ‘Captain’s Challenge’. This means that participating VfL fans will not only be competing against each other, but also against the captains of the Green-and-Whites’ men’s and women’s teams. Supporters predicting the men’s Bundesliga results will go up against the She-Wolves’ trio of captains, consisting of Svenja Huth, Dominique Janssen and Popp. And fans predicting women´s matches will compete against Arnold. Users need the VfL app and an online account in order to participate in the prediction game.
