VfL Wolfsburg kick off Matchday 11 of the Bundesliga this evening away to Borussia Mönchengladbach (20:30 CET). Both teams are currently stuck in mid-table and each got a point last weekend – but are in the round of 16 in the DFB Cup, where they will meet again in early December. That means two trips to Borussia-Park in the space of just over three weeks for the Wolves, but in the first match, it is all about points in the Bundesliga.
After watching the majority of the Wolves’ opening games of the season from the bench, Belgian centre-back Sebastiaan Bornauw has started to play a bigger role for Niko Kovac’s team in recent weeks and is highly likely to feature at Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday evening (20:30 CET). In this interview, Bornauw shares his thoughts on the competition for places at VfL, reveals his musical side and reflects on his first goal for VfL.
Five days after the 2-2 draw at home to Werder Bremen, VfL Wolfsburg slipped to their fifth consecutive away defeat on Friday evening, losing 4-0 at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Tomas Cvancara converted the home side’s first clear-cut opportunity in the 16th minute before Rocco Reitz doubled their advantage three minutes before half-time.
Kevin Paredes made his first start of the 2023/24 season in last weekend’s 3-2 defeat in Augsburg and was later voted as Man of the Match by VfL fans. He also came off the bench in the DFB Cup success over RB Leipzig in midweek to help the team progress to the round of 16.
After overcoming holders RB Leipzig at the Volkswagen Arena in the Round of 32 last week, VfL Wolfsburg have been handed a trip to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the last 16 of the DFB Cup.
VfL Wolfsburg played out their first stalemate of the 2023/24 Bundesliga season on Matchday 10 as Werder Bremen held Niko Kovac’s side to a 2-2 draw. Vaclav Cerny (37’) and Kevin Paredes (59’) made the scoresheet in front of 28,917 spectators at a sold-out Volkswagen Arena, with Marvin Ducksch (7’) and Rafael Borre (65’) on target for the visitors. The Green-and-Whites stay in ninth place in the standings.
VfL Wolfsburg must make do without Patrick Wimmer until further notice: the winger tore the syndesmosis ligament in his right ankle during last Saturday’s away match at Augsburg and requires an operation.
When VfL welcome SV Werder Bremen to the Volkswagen Arena on Sunday 5 November (15:30 CET) – just five days after knocking DFB Cup holders Leipzig out of the competition – they won’t just be facing the Bundesliga’s only other northern club. The two teams also have the most evenly balanced head-to-head record in the top flight, having won 20 games each, shared the spoils on ten occasions and scored 89 goals apiece. Intriguingly, though, both VfL and Werder have yet to draw a game this season.
VfL Wolfsburg’s DFB Cup journey continues! The Wolves earned a narrow 1-0 win over defending champions RB Leipzig to knock them out of the competition in the second round thanks to Vaclav Cerny’s first goal for VfL.
Last time out, the Wolves suffered a 2-1 loss at home to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, sending them down to ninth in the Bundesliga, while Augsburg climbed to tenth with a 5-2 win at 1. FC Heidenheim. With nothing between them in the table, the two sides now face one another on Matchday 9 (kick-off: Saturday 28 October, 15:30 CEST).
