Substitute Sheraldo Becker made the three points safe on 84 minutes with a header which narrowly creeped over the line.
After a win at home to Maccabi Haifa, 1. FC Union Berlin go to Feyenoord, looking to keep up the positive results in Group E. Goals from Andreas Voglsammer, Kevin Behrens and Taiwo Awoniyi secured the Matchday 2 win over the Israeli champions to keep Union in the fight with Slavia Prague and the Dutch side to qualify beyond the group phase.
The event will go ahead under the 3G rules.
“There was a catastropic situation outside the ground before the match,” said Christian Arbeit, Managing Director for Communications at 1. FC Union Berlin. “Hundreds of Union fans didn’t get into the stadium. That is not acceptable. We will meet with Feyenoord and UEFA to assess the situation and address these issues.”
Club members will have the opportunity to get the remaining tickets in a ballot process.
Union went down on MD3 of the Europa Conference League 3-1 at Feyenoord. Despite Taiwo Awoniyi pulling one back towards the end of the first half, the Dutch side were in a two-goal lead through Alireza Jakhanbahksh and Bryan Linssen. Luis Sinisterra added a third to leave Union bottom of Group E after three matches in the competition. A week ago, Union extended the unbeaten home run in the Bundesliga to 21 matches with a 2-0 win over Wolfsburg. Urs Fischer’s men were fortunate to go into the interval at 0-0 after Lukebakio hit the post from a few yards out. But Union battled back into the game, showing character and determination to get the points. Awoniyi scored his sixth Bundesliga goal of the campaign on 48 minutes before Sheraldo Becker came off the bench to make another impact and score the second of the afternoon.
But substitute Faghir shot from the edge of the area in the 93rd minute to give the home side a share of the spoils.
A strike in the 93rd minute from Wabil Faghir denied 1. FC Union Berlin all three points from Sunday’s Bundesliga match at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Stuttgart. Urs Fischer’s team bounced back from the disappointing loss in Rotterdam to dominate the game in Stuttgart, but unable to press home a man advantage. Taiwo Awoniyi fired home his seventh strike of the campaign to give Union a deserved lead before the break. Atakan Karazor picked up two bookings in the space of 33 seconds to land another blow to Stuttgart’s chances of fighting back. The Köpenick club asserted control on the game, but couldn’t get the second goal. Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side had little to lose and started to take more risks towards the end of the 90. After missing a chance shortly before, Faghir’s shot took a wicked deflection to beat Andreas Luthe and leave Union feeling like two points lost were like a defeat.
There is a 2G health and safety system in place. Fans need to show proof of vaccination or recovery.
