“Last season was very disappointing in the end. We all needed some time. In my role, I had to switch gears again quickly because several challenges awaited. The team had sufficient time to process things. The international players are still away and will only return to the team next week. I have perceived those who are here to be very motivated. There’s a good atmosphere and a great desire and excitement for the new season. Of course, you can also feel that we have different squad situation with players from the U23s and the U19s. But that’s a good opportunity for the lads to showcase themselves. It will of course get more crowded next week.”

Fabio Schneider Joins Greifswalder SC

Over the next two years the 20 year old midfielder moved his way up through the U-19s, eventually signing his first professional contract, and joining Union’s squad for the 2021/22 UEFA Europa Conference League. For the second half of last season, the right-footed Schneider was loaned to Kuopion PS in Finland, where he made a total of four appearances (one of which for the 2nd team.) An injury during his time there prevented more playing time.

Like the day before, players from the U23s and the U19s made up the numbers in training – the internationals are only set to return to Dortmund in mid-July. Felix Nmecha, who was signed at the start of the week, also could not take part in team training. “He came into pre-season carrying an ankle injury from last season. That will definitely last a few more days,” said Sebastian Kehl. The sporting director is hoping that Nmecha will be back on the pitch with his new team-mates next week. “He’s already running individually and working intensively.”
