1. FC Union Berlin

A New Start for Union

Following a poor start to the season that saw just one win from seven league games, Augsburg’s head coach Enrico Maaßen was sacked in October and replaced by Dane Jess Thorup. So far, the change has had the desired effect. The team from the Fuggerstadt are still unbeaten under Thorup, having picked up eight points from four games and scoring ten goals in the process. The team’s morale is also noteworthy, as they have managed to score in all four games after falling behind. Most recently, FCA fought their way to a 1-1 draw at home against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

Thorup: “Vital that we show a reaction”

FCA’s clash on matchday 31 will certainly be a special one, with the game also functioning as a celebration of the club’s success in the 1973/74 Regionalliga 50 years ago. Starting from 11:00 CEST, fans will be able to take part in a range of events outside the stadium, before heading indoors to cheer on the boys. Head coach Jess Thorup is looking forward to experiencing the “special atmosphere” present on the day, and his hopeful that his side will be able to bounce back from last week’s 3-1 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt.

“We have to be ready to give it our all – it’s vital that we show a reaction,” explained the 54-year-old ahead of Saturday’s clash. Thorup is also yet to forget his team’s meeting with Werder in the first round of matches, which saw FCA deliver a disappointing performance and fall to a 2-0 defeat as a result. Augsburg have picked up an impressive 21 points in the second half of the season so far, which they’re hoping to build on in the remaining fixtures. “We’re happy to have avoided relegation, but we now have to continue moving forward.”
