Thanks to the 1-1 draws in Naples and Braga, Union have kept their chances alive of finishing third in the group, and with it remaining in European competition, into the new year. However, it won’t be easy against the 14 time European Champions.  Union need to win, and hope that Sporting Braga lose in Naples. For Union head coach Nenad Bjelica, however, this is no reason to be negative. Even before his debut on the Union bench in Braga, the Croatian was combative and upbeat about his team’s chances: “We want to spend the winter in Europe. It’s about maximum commitment and maximum will. I hope we have a final against Madrid.”

The Dortmund youngsters played a decisive part in qualification for the next round. Charles Herrmann opened the scoring at 1-0 with a dream goal from a free-kick in the 14th minute. The pacey winger then teamed up with Eric da Silva Moreira of FC St. Pauli to create the goal that Max Moerstedt scored to fire the team into a 2-1 lead (34).
