After Werder Bremen’s 2-1 victory at TSG Hoffenheim in the reverse fixture, many fans on the Weser were hoping for a return to Europe. Fifth place was an impressive position for the promoted outfit to be in at the time – but the club officials remained objective and continued to label their survival as the sole objective for the season. This approach has paid off to date: Werder have never dropped below 11th place in the table this season.

Alex, on Sunday you’ll celebrate your tenth anniversary in the job. You were promoted to the role of director of football at TSG Hoffenheim on 2 April 2013. How do you feel now, ten years later?

Andrej Kramarić won 2-0 away in Türkiye with Croatia. But there was no TSG head-to-head battle, as Ozan Kazak was an unused substitute. Ihlas Bebou and the Togo team drew 1-1 with Burkina Faso, while Angelo Stiller and the Germany U21s were held to a goalless stalemate by Romania. Muhammed Damar, Joshua Quarshie and Umut Tohumcu all featured as the Germany U19s beat Slovenia 3-0; the team did, however, miss out on EURO qualification.

For 22 years, Thomas Delaney’s life revolved around just one club. After taking his first steps in the game at the age of three with top Danish outfit FC Copenhagen, he would go on to wear the white jersey of the capital-city club for more than two decades. “I always thought that my biggest goal in life was to become captain of FC Copenhagen,” Delaney says looking back. Delaney fulfilled this lifelong dream at the age of just 22. He stayed there a further three years before venturing abroad, even though the move to Werder Bremen was hardly a big leap, at least not geographically.
