Boyhood Hertha fan Marius Gersbeck is back at the club! The goalkeeper has signed from Karlsruher SC and put pen to paper on a deal valid until 2026. The 27-year-old will wear the number 35. “We’re delighted that Marius has decided to tackle the upcoming challenges with us. He’s a Herthaner through and through. He developed into one of the best goalkeepers in the league at Karlsruhe and possesses all the qualities to be an important figure in our team,” explained sporting director Benjamin Weber. “Playing for the first team at my hometown club is an incredible feeling. I now want to contribute to a successful team and help out as much as I can,” said the goalkeeper.
Marius Gersbeck’s delight at being back at Hertha BSC was clear to see as he stepped into the club’s offices to complete the final paperwork around his move. The Berlin native was busy shaking hands, greeting staff members and hugging old friends, accompanied by our club media team. “I think it’s great that there are still so many familiar faces at the club. There are people working for the club that I’ve known for years. That’s why it’s even nicer to be able to return here and to be able to play for all these people,” Gersbeck said with a smile. He added, “I just feel at home here. I can’t imagine anything better!” In an interview, the 27-year-old spoke about returning home and the experience he’s been able to amass during his career so far.
In Márton Dárdai and Jessic Ngankam, Hertha have two players called up to the Germany U21s squad for the U21s EUROs. Antonio Di Salvo originally called up a provisional squad of 26 players, including goalkeepers, before cutting three players on 14th June. “We have worked together towards this tournament with the players, coaching staff and backroom staff for two years, the anticipation is enormous,” said Di Salvo ahead of his first U21 EUROs as head coach. “Now it is about getting the team into as good condition as possible step by step and over lots of training sessions, which I am unbelievably looking forward to,” explained the 43-year-old.
Hertha BSC submitted all documents required for the acquisition of their Bundesliga 2 licence for the 2023/24 season to the DFL on Wednesday. “We’ve done all we can in the last few weeks and months to fulfil the demands of the DFL. We’d like to thank the DFL for their constructive communication, as well as our partners and all supporters of Hertha BSC who have been right by our side throughout this process,” explained CEO Thomas E. Herrich. We now await the decision of the DFL.
Pál Dárdai is staying at the Old Lady as head coach. “We are delighted that Pál will be helping to shape a fresh start at Hertha as head coach. He loves Hertha BSC and with his hard work, dedication and passion for our club, he is the right man for the upcoming challenges that we will face together,” said Benjamin Weber. The head coach is also looking forward with anticipation to continuing his journey. “I am very satisfied and happy. Thomas Herrich, Benjamin Weber and I have had good and honest talks. I feel that we all work, want to work and will work together for the good of Hertha BSC,” said Dárdai.
The Hertha players are currently on their summer holidays, but will soon be returning to the capital to prepare for the 2023/24 season. “The players will start doing some exercises themselves earlier on so that their muscles aren’t too sore on the first day back or they get worse issues. Pre-season is technically underway already,” explained our head coach Pál Dárdai. The first official training session ahead of the new campaign is on 26th June.
Maximilian Mittelstädt has left the ‘Old Lady’ and joins VfB Stuttgart ahead of the new season. “We’d have liked to keep Maxi in blue and white, but we respect his desire for a transfer. He developed from an academy prospect into a Bundesliga regular here and has always given everything for our club. We wish him all the best,” said sporting director Benjamin Weber on the move. The decision was not an easy one for the full back. “Everyone knows how much of a connection I have to this – it is and will continue to be very special to me. From the heart, I wish Hertha nothing but the best,” said Mittelstädt.
