“We create participation on equal terms” – this is one of the guiding principles that the foundation uses to organise the content of its own work. It also supports projects that focus on inclusion. Examples of this include the cooperation with the Sit’n’Skate project and the close collaboration with the Special Olympics NRW that has been in place for several years – in order to also make it possible for children with disabilities to be a mascot at a BVB home game.
The team paid a high price for the victory, however. Because Ousmane Diallo, who is increasingly settling into his stride, got his boot stuck in the turf in the 42nd minute and went off with an injury. Up until that point, BVB had dominated the game with a high share of the possession, forced RWO onto the defensive and not given away a chance to the opposition. At the other end, the Black & Yellows squandered several chances and only found the net once: Ousmane Diallo broke through down the flank and passed to Fritz Fleck, who provided the assist for Nick Cherny to put his team into a highly deserved 1-0 lead in the 39th minute. Justin Hoy also struck the post following a lovely move involving Fritz Fleck and Nick Cherny.
The award was presented to BVB Managing Director Carsten Cramer by the Anti-Semitism Commissioner of the United Kingdom, Lord John Mann, and representatives of the Combat Anti-Semitism Movement. The award ceremony took place at the “Phoenix des Lumières” art centre in Dortmund, a former gas blower hall of the Phoenix West blast furnace plant.
BVB are currently on a run of three away games in a row in three competitions: the UEFA Champions League, the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal. The Black & Yellows tasted success in the first one in Milan on Tuesday evening. The 3-1 victory away to AC Milan prematurely secured qualification for the round of 16. There are four days between the match at the San Siro and the next competitive game at the BayArena on Sunday – an unusually large gap for an English week. But not all the players were able to use that time to become fit and healthy.
The score was 2-2 at the end of normal time. Almugera Kabar slotted home the decisive penalty kick after Paris Brunner had been denied by the France goalkeeper. Brunner subsequently received the Player of the Tournament award.
The Black & Yellows are likely to have fond memories of their last clash with the Lions: the U23s played like a team unleashed as they ran out 4-1 winners at Grünwalder Straße at the end of March. Coach Jan Zimmermann certainly would not mind if history were to repeat itself this time. However, the coach emphasised: “It will be a close game. 1860 have much more quality than their current position in the table would suggest.” With a wink, the coach added: “But that applies to us too.” The men from Munich are currently 14th in the table with 20 points, while the U23s are directly above them with one point more.
We’ll be broadcasting live from 12:30 CET on:
BVB kicked off against Eintracht Braunschweig, and coach Alexander Steinmetz made a 2v2 personnel change: Belgian newcomer Bradley Destoop played alongside Roee Feldman this time, and the game ended in a draw. After Roee Feldman lost the first 1vs1, Dennis Malcherczyk came up trumps in the deciding game, winning 3-2 to secure a draw.
Sunday 3 December (17:30 CET): Bayer Leverkusen vs. BVB
BVB will be away to the league leaders on the first Sunday of Advent: Bayer Leverkusen are still unbeaten in all competitions this season and currently top the Bundesliga standings with 11 victories and one draw (against Bayern Munich). BVB have taken the three points back home to Dortmund with them in both of the last two campaigns: the Black & Yellows ran out 2-0 away victors in January this year and claimed a 4-3 win in September 2021.
