U23s to face Bayreuth in their last home game of the season

A great sense of relief swept over the Black and Yellows on Monday evening: by taking a point in the 3-3 draw in Aue, the U23s have secured their spot in the 3. Liga next season. “That has taken off any pressure that we still had on our shoulders,” reveals coach Jan Zimmermann, “the mood has been very calm and relaxed ever since.” The several-hour journey back from the Ore Mountains to Dortmund seemed much less strenuous on the way back thanks to the success on the pitch: “The boys enjoyed the ride…”

SV Werder Bremen

Werder secure second win of the Bundesliga season

SV Werder Bremen put their away defeat against Heidenheim behind them as they earned their second win of the season against 1. FC Köln, beating the away side 2-1. Goals from new arrival Rafael Borré (38’) and substitute Justin Njinmah (67’), who scored just moments after coming on, turned the game in the hosts’ favour after ex-Bremen player Davie Selke had given the visitors the lead (31’). This meant that Werder were able to secure an important win in front of 42,100 spectators at the sold-out wohninvest WESERSTADION.

FCA win 2-1 in friendly against SpVgg Greuther Fürth

After the 2-2 draw against VfL Bochum last weekend, FCA head coach Enrico Maaßen requested a friendly against second-division side Greuther Fürth during the break from competitive action. The fixture would also offer a reunion with a familiar face now playing for Greuther Fürth: Simon Asta, who came through the academy at FCA, has been under contract at the second-division side since 2020. Summer arrival Kevin Mbabu, who played at right-back, made his first appearance in FCA colours.

FC Bayern München

Mob Deep: Lothar Matthäus says Bayern Munich has “20 potential starting XI players” on its roster

“When everyone is fit, the current squad is the best equipped Bayern squad of all-time in terms of quality. Bayern now has 20 potential starting XI players. In my time there were 13, later 16, 17. However, today you can make 5 substitutions,” Matthäus told Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “A year and a half or two years ago I criticized that the Bayern squad wasn’t so deep. I don’t think it’s because of my criticism, but there has been a rethink. Bayern have been very active in the last two transfer windows, and I have praised (sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić) for that.”

Grifo nets hat-trick as SCF turn it around in Serbia

“In the first half, our positional play wasn’t good enough at times and we conceded because we were totally asleep. It allowed our opposition to gain confidence in the game,” head coach Christian Streich was critical of the first 45 minutes in his post-match interview but went on to compliment his team’s second-half showing. “Our positioning was much better after half time and then we got our goals. In the end, it was a deserved win against very hard-working opposition.”

TSG Hoffenheim

Stach: “Tennis will always be part of me”

Right next to the offices of TSG Hoffenheim are a set of tennis courts belonging to FC 1920 Zuzenhausen. It is here that TSG’s new signing Anton Stach chose to serve up, in the most literal sense, his first interview with SPIELFELD. Hardly a surprise, given his personal history: until the age of 14, the Germany international was just as likely to be spotted on the red clay of a tennis court as the green grass of a football pitch. At one point he was one of the top ten players in his age group in Germany. “During my entire childhood I played both football and tennis. Sometimes I’d play football earlier in the day, then go to tennis training later. Then at the weekends it was football matches and tennis tournaments,” says Stach, who, on the advice of his father, had to choose to commit to one. In the end, it was the team sport which won out.
