Merci, Mo!

It was a hell of a ride, Mo! You lived and breathed our club. Thank you for three amazing years.

Rouven Schröder, sporting director

  • “In three years at RB Leipzig, Mo Simakan won the fans’ hearts and gave it his all on the pitch. He’s a great guy who fully identifies with the club and the city.

Now, Mo has decided that he wants to take his career in a different direction. We respect this and thank him for his time in an RBL kit. We’ll remember all the amazing moments. We wish him all the best for his future!”

Mohamed Simakan

  • “For me, it was an honour to have the chance to play for this club, in this city and for these fans. The three years I spent at RB Leipzig were unbelievable and it was the best part of my career so far. I was able to improve a lot, and we experienced lots of special moments here together. Of course, the highlights were the Pokal wins and the huge parties afterwards!

I want to thank the coaching team and the rest of the staff. Thank you to the team and everyone involved with the club. And a special thank you to all the RBL fans. They had my back through thick and thin and I always tried to give as much as I could back to them. There were a few legendary celebrations with our fans in the stands – for me, those are unforgettable moments.

I’m going to miss everything about here a lot and it’ll stay in my heart forever. Once Leipzig – always Leipzig. Now, it’s time for me to embark on a new footballing adventure which I’m really looking forward to.”

Willpower, personified

Mohamed Simakan made the switch from RC Strasbourg Alsace to Leipzig in summer 2021 and made 122 appearances for the club, racking up 20 goal contributions in the process.

The 6’1” defender made his RBL debut on 7th August 2021 in the first round of the DFB-Pokal, as RB Leipzig beat SV Sandhausen 4-0.

His first goal as an RB Leipzig player came in a 6-1 victory over Greuther Fürth on 13th March 2022. Simakan made 41 appearances in all competitions in his debut season, which showed that RBL had secured the services of a top-quality player.

He received a call up to the France U21 national team in November 2022 as a result of his impressive performances and started in the 1-1 draw with Norway. He went on to make a total of seven appearances for France at U21 level.

The highlights of Mohamed Simakan’s time at RBL were undoubtedly winning the DFB-Pokal in 2022 and 2023, as well as emerging victorious in the 2023 Supercup. In two of the three finals, Simakan was named in the starting XI (he did not appear in the 2023 DFB-Pokal final).

The defender scored two goals and registered three assists in eighteen UEFA Champions League matches for RB Leipzig. In the 3-2 win over Real Madrid, he was given the “Man of the Match” award.

Mo Simakan cemented himself as a man for Leipzig’s history books with his goal on 16th December 2023 in the 3-1 triumph over TSG Hoffenheim, which was RBL’s 500th in the Bundesliga

Thanks for an amazing three years, Mo!
