The end of a season always marks the departure of some players, even if their memories and successes remain. So, 1. FC Union Berlin now says goodbye to an anchor in defence, a dribbling ace and a goalkeeping legend.

The rock at the back – Robin Knoche moves on

Robin Knoche is leaving 1. FC Union Berlin at the end of this season after four years and 157 appearances. The Braunschweig-born central defender moved to Berlin-Köpenick in the summer of 2020 and quickly established himself at the heart of Union’s defence. But it was not only at the back that he enriched Union’s play, Knoche also proved his nerve as a reliable penalty taker, especially in the UEFA Europa League, where he ensured the team’s progression to the first knock out round with his nerveless spot-kicks. In total, the 31-year-old has scored eleven goals and provided five assists for Union.

American wonderkid on loan – Brenden Aaronson returns to England

Brenden Aaronson joined 1. FC Union Berlin on loan from relegated Premier League side Leeds United in the last summer transfer window, winning the hearts of Union fans with his dashing style of play, his speed and, not to forget, his decisive goal against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

After 38 appearances, two goals and two assists, his time in Berlin has come to an end and he is returning to England.

Jakob Busk – Eight remarkable years

The promotion hero and crowd favourite Jakob Busk will leave the club at the end of the current season. Busk came to Berlin from Denmark as a promising talent and quickly became a regular goalkeeper before injuries hampered his performance. Nevertheless, he remained loyal to the club, showed constant ambition in training and even took on responsibility off the pitch as a member of the team council. After eight years and 57 competitive matches, his time at 1. FC Union Berlin comes to an end this summer.

Each of these three players have made their own significant contribution to the history of 1. FC Union Berlin and will therefore always remain a part of the club.

After all. Once an Unioner, always an Unioner!
