1. FC Union Berlin have signed 22-year-old Hungarian international midfielder Andras Schäfer.
Schäfer joins from Dunjaska Streda where he made 17 appearances in the Slovakian top division, scoring three goals and assisting three. The talented midfielder excelled as a youngster at MTK Budapest before joining Italian side Genoa in 2019. Schäfer spent time on loan at Chievo Verona before returning to Genoa and then moving on to Slovakia. Whilst establishing himself in Hungary’s national team, Schäfer has made 61 appearances for DAC, featuring also in Europa League and Conference League football. For the national team, Schäfer featured in all three of Hungary’s games at the European Championship, scoring in a 2-1 win over Germany.
“To play in the Bundesliga and therefore one of the top leagues in Europe is something very special. Union has developed impressively in recent years and left its mark on the Bundesliga. Together with the club, I also want to develop further and gain a foothold here. I’m very much looking forward to the team and the new task,” said Schäfer on his arrival at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
“We have been following Andras closely for some time and we like his mentality, his development and his courageous play with the ball. He is young, ambitious and a player who is now already available to us with immediate effect,” said Oliver Ruhnert, 1. FC Union Berlin’s Managing Director for Professional Football.
