Three Mainz players got their World Cup campaigns underway on Thursday. Silvan Widmer and Edimilson Fernandes were able to celebrate as Switzerland picked up a 1-0 win over Cameroon, whilst Jae-Sung Lee’s South Korea were held to a 0-0 draw by Uruguay.
Varying playing times for the three players
FSV’s captain Silvan Widmer played for the full 90 minutes in his familiar right-back position on Thursday, whereas compatriot Fernandes had to watch the victory from the bench. Breel Embolo scored the winner shortly after the break to give the Swiss their dream start.
Jae-Sung Lee featured for 74 minutes as South Korea and Uruguay played out a 0-0 draw in their Group H opener.
Second group games on Monday
The three Zerofivers will be back in action on Monday. South Korea are set to face Ghana (14:00 CET) whilst Switzerland are to come up against tournament favourites Brazil (17:00 CET).
