The Zerofivers are taking on Dortmund at the MEWA ARENA on Wednesday evening for their first home game of 2023 (18:30 CET). Bo Svensson referred to BVB as “one of the top three teams in Germany along with Bayern and Leipzig” in Tuesday’s presser and the head coach is expecting a tough test against Terzić’s side. The sides met on a Wednesday evening last season after the game was rearranged following a coronavirus outbreak in the Mainz camp.

Due a home win

Mainz have won just one of their seven games at the MEWA ARENA this season, but it was a memorable one. FSV scored more goals in their 5-0 win over FC Köln than they have in the rest of their home matches combined.

Top five on the road

Mainz have picked up 13 points on the road so far which is almost twice the amount they have picked up at home. It was the other way round last season as FSV collected 35 of their 46 points at the MEWA ARENA.

Dortmund looking to improve away from home

Borussia are third in the home table on 19 points but they have left a lot to be desired on the road. Dortmund have picked up just nine points from their away games so far and only three teams have lost more matches than Terzic’s side away from home. BVB have also lost five of their last six matches on the road.

Switched on at set pieces

Mainz and Dortmund have each conceded just four goals from set pieces so far this season. Only two teams in the Bundesliga can boast a better record.

Ingvartsen equalised from the spot in FSV’s 1-1 draw with Stuttgart at the weekend.

Dead ball specialists

A third of Mainz’s goals have come from set pieces. Last time out against Stuttgart, Marcus Ingvartsen remained cool from the spot to put his side level just before half time.

Speaking of penalties…

Only two Bundesliga teams have been awarded more penalties than Mainz this season. FSV have been awarded four, whereas Union and Freiburg have been awarded five.

Terzic’s super subs

No team has scored more goals through substitutes than BVB this season (7 goals, level with Eintracht). Substitutes Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Giovanni Reyna came off the bench to score for Dortmund in the 4-3 win over Augsburg at the weekend.

Strong build-up play

FSV have kept the ball well this season and have only conceded two goals after losing possession during build-up play. Dortmund on the other hand have conceded ten goals after losing the ball, the most of any side.

Dominant Dortmunder

Only FC Bayern have averaged more possession than BVB this season. Dortmund, who have averaged 55.7% of the ball,  also have the third-highest pass completion rate in the Bundesliga.

Physical Mainzer

Mainz commit an average of 13 fouls per game, the second highest in the league after Union. Dortmund, however, only commit an average of 9 fouls per game, the second fewest in the league.

Suspended engine machines

Dominik Kohr and Jude Bellingham are both suspended for Wednesday’s clash after picking their fifth yellow cards on the last matchday. Kohr missed both matches against BVB last season due to suspension.

Officials

Sascha Stegemann is in charge of Wednesday’s match with Christof Günsch and Eduard Beitinger as his assistants. Martin Petersen is the fourth official.
