After an increasing number of cases of testicular cancer became known among professional footballers last year including 1. FC Union Berlin’s own Timo Baumgartl, the club decided in August 2022 to carry out a screening examination for all players. Lerchbaumer was also part of the medical team for this examination.

Mathis Bruns moves to Stuttgarter Kickers

Born in Bielefeld, Bruns moved from East Westphalia to the German capital in the summer of 2011. At Union, he played in all youth teams up to the A-youth level and played 24 games in the U-19 Bundesliga. Last season, the 19-year-old was already loaned out to Italian club US Lecce for six months, where he played in two games for the U18s and three games for the U19s.

Fortuna have only just returned to the Regionalliga Nordost following a four-year absence, having played in the division from 2009 to 2019, but finding themselves relegated to the Sachsen Landesliga in the 2018/19 season as a result of a major trimming of the squad. There, head coach Steve Maschik, who has been on the touchlines since 2018, has now formed a new, young largely using players from the club’s own youth system.
