Leonardo Bittencourt opens the scoring for Werder | Willi Orbán heads in the equaliser | Szoboszlai scores the 2-1 winner deep in injury time
Lasse Rieß has extended his contract until 2025. The 20-year-old goalkeeper has spent ten years in the Mainz youth academy and is the third choice keeper in the first team. He is a regular starter in the Regionalliga Südwest for the U23s.
VfB Stuttgart earned a 1-1 draw against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Matchday 32.
Born in Rotterdam, Doekhi began to show his promise and was recruited by Excelsior Rotterdam’s youth academy. His talent didn’t go unnoticed and he was presented the opportunity to join one of Europe’s top clubs. Ajax signed the 18-year-old for their famous academy and Doekhi went straight to work with team-mates Mathis De Ligt, Justin Kluivert and Mitchel Bakker. But after two challenging years in Amsterdam, Doekhi packed his bags and signed for Vitesse Arnhem. There, he was given an opportunity to experience first-team football and develop in a club aspiring for success in the Eredivisie.
After a week-long international break, the Bundesliga resumes this weekend. For VfL Wolfsburg, a home match against FC Augsburg is on the schedule on Saturday 1 April (kick-off 15:30 CEST) as seventh hosts 12th in the table. The meeting is another chance for the Wolves to close the gap on the European places.
SV Werder Bremen were beaten 2-1 (0-0) by RB Leipzig and couldn’t secure a point. In a fast-paced and intense game, Ole Werner’s eleven had to hold on against an attacking Leipzig side. The hosts scored after a chance for Werder to make it 1-0 (66’), but referee Florian Badstübner disallowed the goal after a VAR check due to a foul on Leonardo Bittencourt, who scored shortly afterwards for the Green-Whites to make it 1-0 (70’). After the goal, Leipzig moved up a gear and just a few minutes before the final whistle, Willi Orban equalised (87’), before Dominik Szoboszlai (90+6’) scored the winner to make it 2-1.
Nagelsmann was quick to take to his social media accounts to publicly apologize for the words he used against the officiating crew from the match and though the DFL and DFB are going to launch an investigation into the incident, the quickness of his public apology will only work in his favor. Tobias Welz later confirmed that it was the advice from his colleagues based in the replay center in Cologne that made him feel the decision didn’t merit a second look on the video assist monitor on the side of the pitch. He explained his rationale last Sunday on Sport1’s Dopplepass.
