A lot has changed since the last time the Green-Whites faced off against 1. FC Köln. Not only have the club welcomed new head coach Timo Schultz, but the Billy Goats’ style of play has taken on a new appearance. These adjustments are already proving to be successful, as Köln are currently on a three-game unbeaten streak, which they are keen to continue with a win over SVW on Friday, 16th February (20:30 CET) at the RheinEnergieSTADION. In Wednesday’s pre-match press conference, head coach Ole Werner provided an analysis of the upcoming opponent, claiming that “Köln have found their feet.” He proceeded to add: “It will be a challenge to play at a ground where there’s such a great atmosphere. In order to come out on top, we’ll do our best to implement as many of our own strengths into the game as possible.”

“Of course you can lose against Blomberg. They are a solid and well-drilled team that can play a fast-paced game. Both of the games against Blomberg were important, especially with a view to the league. We will face them again on the third matchday,” said Borussia coach Henk Groener.

On the overall balance, Bayern registered four chances on target to City’s nine, so they did have their chances to score, despite City’s resolute defensive shape and pressing traps all over the pitch. John Stones was voted UEFA’s player of the match, typifying how disciplined Guardiola’s side was off the ball and in defense. Leroy Sane had the lion’s share of chances that forced Ederson into making decent saves, but Yann Sommer was equally as busy in addition to the three goals Bayern conceded.
SC captain Christian Günter is looking forward to what will be his first appearance in the Europa League this season, having been sidelined for several months with injury. “I’m really looking forward to being able to play again and that the lads put in some strong performances in the group stage. I hope that I’ll be able to make at least one or two appearances – or more, hopefully – in the Europa League this season,” said Günter.
