After a difficult second half of 2023/24 in which he faced several setbacks, Niclas Stark has got back to full fitness for pre-season and hasn’t missed a single session nor a minute of Werder’s friendlies. This is a stark contrast to last season, during which he played the fewest minutes of any season of his career barring his first-ever campaign in professional football. The 29-year-old spoke to WERDER.DE about this unusual experience, the current stage at which the Green-Whites find themselves and an upcoming milestone.

Tom Rothe was born and grew up in Rendsburg, Schleswig-Holstein. He began his club career at Rendsburger TSV in 2010 before moving to neighbouring Büdelsdorfer TSV. He played there until 2016 before moving to Hamburg with his parents and joining SC Nienstedten. In 2018, Rothe joined the youth section of FC St. Pauli and played in the youth teams of the “Kiezkicker” for three years. In the summer of 2021, he moved to the Ruhr region to join Borussia Dortmund’s youth training centre.

After some of the players who were on international duty over the summer returned to training yesterday, on Wednesday morning it was Maximilian Mittelstädt’s turn.

The 26-year-old has been a part of Union’s Bundesliga team since the summer of 2023 and has made 32 games appearances for them over the past two seasons. In addition to 24 Bundesliga games, the Czech international also made two appearances in the DFB Pokal and six in the UEFA Champions League. During his time in Köpenick, he memorably followed up an assist against SC Braga with a goal in the sixth and final group game against Real Madrid to level the scores at 2-2.
