1. FSV Mainz 05

A night to forget for Mainz

Matchday 31 ended in a 5-0 defeat for Mainz. Despite conceding an early goal, Svensson’s side were in the game in the opening stages and had a glorious chance to equalise through Jonny Burkardt. Things went downhill for the Zerofivers when Niklas Tauer was sent from the field of play in the 23rd minute for a foul in the penalty area and FSV went on to concede four more goals before the break. Mainz looked a lot more solid in the second half but were unable to get on the score sheet.

The result means Niko Kovac’s side remain ninth in the Bundesliga standings.

“We must play an intensive game” against Cologne

BVB remain unbeaten in the Bundesliga this calendar year, having followed up a run of eight successive wins with a frustrating 2-2 draw away to Schalke last weekend. “There was enormous disappointment because we had an opportunity to pick up the next victory. However, we mustn’t be overly critical: there is no team that has picked up as many points as we have this year,” Terzic said.

SC Freiburg

“The season isn’t over yet”

Christian Streich suggested that the game earlier in the season plays no role in his thinking ahead of the clash on Friday night, which he shared with the media during his press conference on Wednesday: “Wolfsburg’s system will be a different one,” suggested the SC head coach and stated that he wants to put that game right to the back of his mind.

1. FSV Mainz 05

“A dagger to all our hearts”

It was a disappointing night for everyone associated with Mainz as The Zerofivers suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Wolfsburg. Svensson’s side put in a decent performance in the opening stages of the first half but were rocked back after Tauer was sent from the field of play. It was ultimately a “devastating ten minutes leading up to half time” that cost Mainz, according to sporting director Martin Schmidt.
