In the first of three consecutive home matches, the professional women’s team of 1. FC Union Berlin will face SC Freiburg II next Saturday, 16 November 2024. The match on the 11th matchday of 2. Bundesliga will be played at 14.00. at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
The lie of the land
SC Freiburg II were beaten 3-0 by FSV Gütersloh 2009 last weekend. It was the fourth defeat in a row for the Breisgau side, who are currently 12th in the table.
Union were held to a goalless 0-0 draw by Borussia Mönchengladbach last weekend. After initial difficulties, Köpenick created several great chances, particularly in the second half, but were unable to get the ball over the line. Nevertheless, the Union side moved up to second place in the table and overtook VfL Bochum.
Opponent check
Ailien Poese’s team will face SC Freiburg II on Saturday, who were promoted from the Regionalliga Süd. Last season, the team from the Black Forest secured the championship in the southern division with a two-point lead over SV Hegnach and were thus promoted directly to 2. Bundesliga. The U20 team was already represented in the Second Division in the 2017/18 and 2022/23 seasons, but did not manage to stay in the league on either occasion.
Like FC Bayern Munich II, Freiburg II started the season late due to the U20 World Cup in Colombia in September. A catch-up match against SV Meppen is therefore still to come. A total of four Freiburg players took part in the tournament for Germany in South America, meaning that the sports club had the most players in the DFB squad.
The team from Baden got off to a successful start in the league in September and October with seven points from their first five games. However, since the 3:1 victory against FC Bayern Munich II in the fifth game, SC Freiburg II have failed to pick up another point or score a goal in their last four games. The negative run began four weeks ago with a 1-0 defeat against FC Ingolstadt, who were bottom of the table and thus celebrated their first and so far only win of the season. This was followed by defeats in Andernach (0:1) and Nuremberg (0:2) and last weekend against Gütersloh (0:3). The team of head coach Amin Jungkeit, who has been in charge since 2021, has now gone 390 minutes without scoring a goal.
Personnel
Union head coach Ailien Poese will be without Maria Cristina Lange, Katja Orschmann, Sarah Abu Sabbah, Sophie Trojahn and Ginger Schulz on Sunday.
Voice before the game
‘Freiburg II are a young and agile team who can keep the spaces very tight in defence and go from game to game with passion and clear development. We need to use our possession more cleverly, be wide awake in defence in transition situations and, above all, make the most of the scoring opportunities that we create,’ said head coach Ailien Poese ahead of the match.
