Line-up and formation: Amos Pieper was unable to feature in Paderborn as he sat out the second game of the two-match ban he received following his red card in the competition last season. Anthony Jung replaced him in defence, while Derrick Köhn started in place of Felix Agu.
Werder’s starting line-up: Zetterer – Jung, Ducksch, Weiser, Bittencourt, Lynen, Grüll, Köhn, Schmid, Malatini und Friedl.
Bench: Backhaus – Deman, Njinmah, Veljkovic, Burke, Hansen-Aarøen, Agu, Nankishi und Topp.

30th minute: Werder lead! Paderborn’s Hoffmeier looks to play a back pass to goalkeeper Schubert, but it’s intercepted by Ducksch. Werder’s number 7 keeps his cool and rounds the keeper, before slotting the ball into the empty net.
35th minute: Bittencourt rattles the post! Grüll’s cross eventually falls to Köhn, who is able to spring Bittencourt. The midfielder hammers a shot on target but is unlucky to only hit the woodwork.
41st minute: So close to a second for Werder! Bittencourt chips the ball over the backline and finds Grüll, who has to fight off Hoffmeier to be able to get off a shot. Schubert manages to get in the way, however.
Werder hold on despite strong pressure from Paderborn
Second-half highlights:
53rd minute: The Green-Whites are denied by the woodwork again! This time, it’s Köhn who has to watch his shot take a deflection and bounce off the post and out of play.
75th minute: Engelns is able to get off a shot from inside the box, but Zetterer is able to parry it.
77th minute: Ducksch looks to get off a shot with his left from inside the box, but Schubert is equal to it.
79th minute: Paderborn continue to put Werder under pressure, as Bäuerle forces Zetterer into making yet another excellent save.
80th minute: Werder are struggling to keep Paderborn contained as the clock continues to tick down. Curda delivers a cross to the near post, but Grimaldi isn’t able to turn it on target.
85th minute: Weiser delivers a cross across the face of goal, but it’s too quick for Ducksch to connect fully with it. The striker is able to get a toe to it, but has to watch as the ball goes over the bar.
90th minute +4: Full time! Werder are through to the round of 16 of the DFB-Pokal for the first time since 2020.
Summary: After an evenly-matched start, Werder were able to take the lead after a mix-up at the back for Paderborn. Marco Grüll then had an excellent opportunity to double their lead, but was denied by Schubert. Werner’s side were able to withstand a near-constant period of pressure from the hosts to secure themselves a spot in the next round.
