Initial reactions and observations

A bog standard friendly shouldn’t raise any questions but this one did. Germany have all the same problems as Bayern Munich, plus a million extra ones specific to the national team itself. So many questions for Flick, with only one answered. The back three is a no-go.
Credit to Flick, subbing on Havertz was the right move. Now subbing Fullkrug … what was up with that? Based on how the players were performing, it should’ve been Sane to go. Strange choices all round.
Wingbacks remain Germany’s Achilles heel. Without proper players in that position, this team will not be successful. Maybe it’s time for Kimmich to move back out wide. He won’t like it, but what options do they have?

79’ — The fans in Bremen cut a frustrated figure. Boos and jeers broke out through the stadium when that last attack broke down.

55’ — Goal. Ten minutes into the second half and Ukraine score from a massive mistake by Ginter.

45’ — The second half is underway. Havertz and Klostermann came on at half time.

Halftime: Germany 1-2 Ukraine. What do you even say? It’s just so bad. The center backs are nonexistent despite the back three. The wingbacks suck. Leroy Sane has been invisible. Is this what the future of Germany holds?

23’ — Goal. Mudryk makes it 2-1. What is this?

19’ — Goal. Ukraine equalizes. What a failure of the back three. One pass undoes everything.

6’ — GOAL! Marius Wolf makes it 1-0! Good start by the Germans.

3’ — Not even 5 minutes in and Germany have their first sight of goal. Mudryk makes a mistake leading to Fullkrug getting the ball in front of goal, though he fires wide.

Kickoff: We’re underway!

One hour until kickoff: We have lineups! The predictions were a little bit off, it seems. Joshua Kimmich does start, but so does Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka. Good Bayern representation overall.

With the season now over, it’s time for the post-credits scene! Except football isn’t a Marvel movie. While most Bayern Munich fans have already been captivated by the numerous transfer rumors floating around on the internet lately, we here at BFW shift our focus to Germany’s friendly versus Ukraine today. It’s a game where Hansi Flick promised he would debut a back three, and it could have numerous implications for the preparations leading to Euro 2024.

Among Bayern players, only Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala are expected to start — the lowest number in years. Does that say more about Bayern, or the German NT at the moment?
