Match summary

VfB put on a brilliant first-half performance in which they linked up well going forward and forced Juventus onto the back foot right from the off. Maxi Mittelstädt had the first opening of the game for Sebastian Hoeneß’s men with a long-range effort (3’) and Josha Vagnoman was unable to hit the target with a header shortly afterwards (7’), while Deniz Undav could not apply the finishing touch to a promising counter-attack.

Woodwork denies Demirovic

The visitors refused to loosen their grip on the game as the half wore on and were unfortunate not to take the lead when Enzo Millot’s brilliant pass released Ermedin Demirovic, who struck the base of the right-hand post with an angled drive. Juventus goalkeeper Mattia Perin tipped a header from Undav over the bar just before half-time (41’), leaving the match goalless at the break.

VfB remained the better team in the second half as they carried on where they had left off prior to the internal, forcing Juventus deep into their own half in their own stadium. Undav thought he had fired in the opening goal in the 48th minute, only for it to be disallowed for handball following a VAR review.

Perin keeps Juventus in it

Perin saved Demirovic’s rasping effort from just inside the box (61’) and the goalkeeper frustrated VfB against just 60 seconds later when he kept out Millot’s effort following a mazy run.

Millot’s missed penalty

The away side had the chance to win it in the 85th minute when Danilo was sent off for a second bookable offence following a foul on Anthony Rouault, for which VfB were awarded a penalty. However, when Perin saved Millot’s spot-kick the match appeared to be destined for a draw.

Touré hits the winner

VfB had other ideas, though. In the second minute of stoppage time, Millot threaded a ball through to substitute Touré, who lashed in a richly deserved winner to give Hoeneß’s side their first Champions League victory of the current campaign.

Goal

1-0: 90’+2: Millot plays a lovely pass into the run of Touré, who controls the ball brilliantly before rifling an unstoppable shot into the net from seven metres out.
