Marius Bülter: “We were not compact at the start, even if the first conceded goal came from a set-piece. We were then in shock. We had set out to keep a clean sheet for a long time. After the first goal, we were completely out of sorts in the first half. We gave a different account of ourselves in the second half, were more attacking and had more possession. We were then able to show our strengths better. A point would not have been undeserved. We know we only have three points from four games, but the last two games in particular weren’t easy. We need time to integrate the new players. It will now be important to return to winning ways. We’re looking forward to starting our international journey on Wednesday.”

Oliver Baumann: “We were not awake in the first 10 minutes. Even after conceding two early goals, it’s about keeping calm, you then have to build the lads up. We showed a different side to ourselves in the second half, pulled a goal back and also had opportunities to score a second goal. We applied pressure and kept Union away from our goal. But if you go 2-0 down here, it’s going to be tough. 11 conceded goals after four matches is too many.”

Pellegrino Matarazzo: “What we wanted to avoid happened. We conceded two goals in the space of five minutes. Firstly, there was a set-piece that we did not clear, and for the second conceded goal we lost the ball too easily. Union were clearly better in the first half, even if we did stabilise somewhat as time went on. The second half was then okay. We changed up our structure. We defended very differently and played with more courage. Towards the end, we were close to making it 2-2.”

Bo Svensson (1. FC Union Berlin coach): “We’re very happy about the victory. We started very well with the two goals; the entire first half was very positive overall. It was difficult for us to get control in the second half. I do believe that the win is deserved, but it was tight in the second half and we could have conceded an equaliser too. We still have a lot of work to do.”
