Beier makes EURO debut

It was a huge moment for Maximilian Beier: the TSG Hoffenheim striker came on as a substitute in the 65th minute of Germany’s 1-1 draw with Switzerland on Sunday. This was the TSG player’s second appearance for his country and his introduction made him the first Hoffenheim player to represent Germany at a European Championship or World Cup.

Just five minutes after his substitution, Beier almost won a penalty, but referee Daniele Orsato was unmoved despite what appeared to be a clear pull on Beier by Silvan Widmer. With Beier on the pitch, Germany drew 1-1 in stoppage time through Niclas Füllkrug to secure top spot in the group. Oliver Baumann, however, did not play.

Parallel to the Germany match, Hungary beat Scotland 1-0 with a goal in the tenth minute of stoppage time to finish third in their group and keep their chances of reaching the last 16 alive. Attila Szalai was substituted on in the 74th minute.
