Former Man Utd defender Paul Parker insists “someone is definitely going to be offended” by his claims Christian Eriksen would have preferred not to have won the Comeback of the Year award.

It was announced on Monday that Man Utd midfielder Eriksen won the Laureus World Comeback of the Year award.

The 30-year-old spent the second-half of last season at Brentford having returned to action just months after .

Eriksen was contracted to Inter Milan at the time of his cardiac arrest during the first-half of a Euro 2020 group stage game against Finland on June 12 2021.

After being treated on the pitch, Eriksen was later fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator which meant he was no longer permitted to play in Serie A, leading to his release from Inter.

And Man Utd signed Eriksen on a free transfer last summer following his release from Brentford .

In his acceptance speech at a ceremony in Paris, Eriksen said: “It has been an incredible last one-and-a-half years now. With a lot of ups and downs, obviously the biggest downs came at that point. It changed my life for the worse but luckily the doctors and medics and teammates around reacted quickly and got me back.

“I was lucky nothing serious happened. It happens, unluckily. What I learnt from this is that you forget the people around you, obviously, Sabrina [Eriksen’s wife] gets emotional from being around when it happened, and you just have to focus for them.

“I’ve felt like myself when I came back and I’ve been myself since. I was myself anyway, only for that stupid moment. I haven’t changed.

“But I think I’ve started to enjoy my life, my wife, and kids more. I’m a bit more relaxed, not as nervous as I was before and I didn’t feel like I was nervous before but it just changes your dynamic. Life is very good. Life is very important.”

But former Man Utd left-back Parker claims Eriksen “doesn’t want to be reminded of what happened” and would rather not have won the award.

Parker told SpilXperten: “I think it is the thought that matters and the thought was definitely there from the people because they are so pleased to see him back at his highest level after he almost died at the Euros.

“The way he has responded has been beyond everything I have ever seen.

“He doesn’t need to be reminded of it all the time and with that trophy he got there, he will be reminded about it every day. I think it’s a kind of trophy that he wants to put away because he doesn’t want to be reminded of what happened.

“Someone is definitely going to be offended by what I just said but there are certain things that you don’t want to be reminded of.

“He might appreciate the thought behind it and the pet on the back he got, but I think – if he could choose by himself – he would rather not have won that trophy.”
