A penalty kick by Kylian Mbappé to level the scores at 1-1 for Paris Saint-Germain against Newcastle United in the eighth minute of stoppage time has taken the race for top spot to the wire. The team that qualifies for the UEFA Champions League last 16 as the winner of “Group of Death F” will be determined by the match between BVB and PSG at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK on 13 December.
A draw in that game on 13 December would be enough to take BVB into the group winner pot in the draw. PSG, meanwhile, need a victory in order to finish in top spot – and avoid potentially being eliminated from the competition entirely. Because a draw would take the French side to eight points, as would a victory for Newcastle against Milan. The English club would then come out on top due to the better head-to-head record.
One thing’s for sure: Borussia Dortmund have qualified for the round of 16. Paris Saint-Germain can no longer finish bottom of the group.
