They are usually thrilling clashes when the Black & Yellows go up against the Green & Whites. No other pairing in the history of the Bundesliga has produced more victories for the team that initially fell 1-0 behind. There have been 18 such comebacks. The facts on the match.
The scenario: Fourth against 14th. While BVB have won their last four games in a row, Werder have lost three of their last four matches. Borussia have two points more on the board than they had at the same stage of last season, while Werder have three points fewer.
Home/away: The Black & Yellows are unbeaten in 19 Bundesliga home games stretching back into last season. The last such run came more than six years ago. The run of consecutive home games in which BVB have scored at least one goal now stands at 55. Bremen have lost each of their last six outings on the road. Their last such losing streak came more than 43 years ago.
Head-to-head record: Borussia have lost 10 times to Bremen after going 1-0 up, but have turned a deficit around eight times themselves – most recently in 2020/21. In their Bundesliga history, BVB only have more wins against Frankfurt (49) than they do against Werder (47), but the record in BVB’s last five home games against Bremen is even (two victories, one draw, two defeats). Marco Reus has only scored more against Mainz than he has against Werder (14 goals).
Statistics: Borussia Dortmund have won each of their past four Bundesliga matches and are unbeaten in 15 games stretching back into last season. BVB have taken points from three matches this season in which they found themselves behind. Werder Bremen have scored at least two goals in each of their last five games (4-0 win against Mainz, 4-2 loss in Heidenheim, 2-1 victory over Köln, 4-2 defeat in Darmstadt and 3-2 loss to Hoffenheim), but have taken only six out of a possible 15 points; in part because they have only shut their opposition out defensively in one of their last 19 matches.
Biggest home victory: The Westphalians have scored 98 goals against the North Germans to date. The most they managed in one game was in a 5-0 win on 2 February 1980 thanks to goals from Wolfgang Vöge, Theo Schneider (two), Manfred Burgsmüller and Herbert Hein.
