Oliver Baumann: “I think we were in control and were defensively solid – apart from the goals we conceded. That was a step forward against a good attack, because it was actually a good game and therefore an unnecessary defeat. Nonetheless, we still need to work on the details. It can’t be that Ngoumou has so much space in front of goal. We have to concede fewer goals. Today is an unlucky defeat. We have to stay on our path, then I’m positive about the future.”
Kevin Akpoguma: “It’s an unnecessary defeat. We played a better game today than we did against Mainz. However, we weren’t consistent enough in terms of the details; in the first half in particular, we were always kacking the final ball with our crosses – we had this situation several times. The penalty was unnecessary and the second goal we conceded was too easy as well. It’s very unlucky that we lost here. We have to be more consistent in the decisive moments in the next few games. I don’t really care about our position in the table at the moment; we have to focus on our performance. That’s the most important thing. The team is focusing on doing things the way the coach wants. We haven’t picked up as many points as we would’ve liked in recent weeks. But if we perform, the points will come again.”
Anton Stach: “It’s a bitter defeat, we certainly should have gotten at least one point here. We didn’t play a bad game, but we just didn’t get our reward. We came back well after falling behind and then actually dominated the game, but it can’t be that Ngoumou is so free for the goal for 2-1. We can build on our performance, but we need another win. It hurts a lot that we lost today. I’d also like to congratulate the Germany U17s, who won the World Cup today. I’m particularly pleased for Max Moerstedt, who has also trained with us on several occasions.”
Pellegrino Matarazzo: “We shouldn’t have lost this game. Two careless mistakes led to the goals we conceded. On top of that, we didn’t manage to get our reward and score a goal during our spells of pressure. We kept our opponents in the game as a result. I’d also like to see us give away fewer penalties. We had numerical superiority when we conceded the second goal, but a mistake in the defensive line meant Ngoumou was free.”
Gerardo Seoane (Borussia Mönchengladbach head coach): “It’s a very important win for us. We’re aware that the performance wasn’t as complete as we would’ve liked. We played against a very strong team. We had a certain amount of luck, but I have to compliment my team for the way they went out onto the pitch today in spite of injuries and illnesses and kept going right until the end.”
