Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund have signed Germany international Felix Nmecha, 22, from VfL Wolfsburg. The midfielder penned a contract until 30 June 2028 on Monday.
“Felix Nmecha is a fast, technically adept and physically strong player who will enhance our midfield both offensively and defensively with his profile. He had a sterling education at Manchester City and played his way into the limelight at Wolfsburg last season,” said BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl, adding: “We’re delighted to have won another Germany international over and are convinced that Felix’s development is a long way from over.”
Nmecha made a significant contribution to VfL Wolfsburg’s positive performance in the Bundesliga last season, registering nine goal involvements (three goals and six assists) across his 30 appearances. The midfielder will wear the number 8 shirt at Borussia Dortmund going forward.
“We’re aware,” said Hans-Joachim Watzke (CEO) and Reinhold Lunow (President) in a joint statement, “that this upcoming transfer has also attracted criticism in recent days due to two Internet posts shared by Felix. As a result, it was important for us to talk intensively with the player about his faith and values. Felix is very young, his religion is deeply rooted in him and he – like all of us – is certainly not without faults. But he has completely convinced us in intensive talks that he does not hold any transphobic or homophobic beliefs. Felix has himself emphasised that he respects all people and loves irrespective of skin colour, religion or sexual orientation.”
Felix Nmecha said: “Borussia Dortmund is a wonderful club that I have followed since my childhood. I’m delighted that I am a part of it now and that I can help the team achieve its objectives in the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League. I hope the fans will give me the chance to get to know me.”
