Despite the absence of players on international duty, VfB won their friendly over Bundesliga 2 outfit 1. FC Nürnberg 2-0 on Thursday afternoon.

700 fans at the Robert-Schlienz-Stadion watched on as VfB dominated the match from the outset but initially failed to take their chances, meaning that the two teams went into the half-time break scoreless.

In the 48th minute, substitute Genki Haraguchi headed home a lovely cross from Jamie Leweling to give VfB a 1-0 lead. The goal spurred on Sebastian Hoeneß’s side, and they began to look even more dangerous in front of goal. Lilian Egloff’s audacious chip just failed to get the better of Carl Klaus in the Nürnberg goal, but the young midfielder was not to be denied in the 56th minute, finding himself in the right place at the right time to stab the ball home and seal the 2-0 win.

Goals: 1-0 Genki Haraguchi (48′), 2-0 Lilian Egloff (56′)

Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “We dominated the first half but lacked precision against a team that was sitting very deep. I wanted to see the players be a bit more selfish and show a real will to win, and we certainly saw that in the first quarter of an hour after the break, and that turned the match in our favour. All in all, I’m very satisfied with the outcome.”
