Rafael Borré cheered for his new teammates from the stands of the wohninvest WESERSTADION during the 4-0 win over 1. FSV Mainz 05. Just one day before, Borré had moved to SVW from Frankfurt on loan just before the end of the transfer window. “I wanted to play for a new club and I’m happy that it’s Werder because I expect to develop even more here,” says the forward, who was also courted by clubs abroad. “For me, the chance to stay in the Bundesliga played a huge role, because it would have taken longer to settle in a different league.”

The Colombian wrote club history for Eintracht Frankfurt in 2022, when he scored the winning penalty for SGE against Rangers in the Europa League final. It was a milestone in his career that the hardworking striker still hangs onto today. “The win makes me proud personally and gives me a lot of confidence,” explains Borré. “That is an experience that I can pass on. It showed us that we have the ability to achieve all our goals together as a team.”

The Colombia international is being talked about as Niclas Füllkrug’s successor at SV Werder, but this comparison does not seem to be a burden for the new signing. “I like this pressure and having these big shoes to fill motivates me; I’m aiming to reach the level that he’s at,” adds Borré. “But I also want to take my own path here and make a name for myself, so that the fans remember me.”

During the international break, Borré proved that he is still in top form despite his lack of match practice as of late, netting the winner for Colombia against Venezuela. “I trained hard and very diligently during the break,” states Werder’s new number 19. “By the time I returned from international duty, the team had already almost fully prepared for the match against Heidenheim. I’m really looking forward to the games where I will be able to participate fully in the preparation and get to know the rest of the lads even better.”
