VfB Stuttgart continued their winning run on Bundesliga Matchday 5 with another fine display to produce a 3-1 triumph over promoted side Darmstadt 98 at a sold-out MHPArena.
Impressive first half
Sebastian Hoeneß’ side were forced to come from behind after a Dan-Axel Zagadou own goal (17′), but they recovered to lead 2-1 at the interval after applying constant pressure to the Darmstadt defence through their pace and commitment. Goals from Enzo Millot (22′) and Serhou Guirassy (32′) were the just reward for a strong first-half performance.
Guirassy decider
Stuttgart remained the dominant team after the break but were unable to make their superiority count. Indeed, it wasn’t until the 92nd minute that Guirassy scored again – with his tenth Bundesliga goal of the season – to seal a 3-1 victory.
Goals
17th minute: Zagadou’s attempt to clear Tim Sharke’s cross from the right doesn’t go as planned and the ball ends up in the Stuttgart net.
22nd minute: Guirassy lays the ball off to Millot, who places a low shot from 12 yards into the corner to equalise.
32nd minute: Guirassy receives a pass from Chris Führich and smashes it into the net from the edge of the area.
92nd minute: Pascal Stenzel is the provider this time as Guirassy dinks the ball over the goalkeeper to make it 3-1.
Reaction
Serhou Guirassy: “I’m very happy about my goals. I try to help my team. We won and are really happy. I have to thank my team-mates. They know my runs and they set the goals up for me.”
