VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß welcomed his players to a public training session on Tuesday afternoon at the Robert-Schlienz-Stadion, where approximately 800 spectators, including 110 children from the VfB academy, watched Wataru Endo and Co gear up for their first competitive game of the season on Saturday.
“Our pre-season preparations have been long and intensive,” said Mittelstädt. “As a footballer you always want to be in competition mode, so that’s why we’re all looking forward to our first competitive game. Unfortunately my injury means I can’t play just yet, but I’m on the right track and can’t wait to run out in our stadium with the fans behind me.”
After working individually on Tuesday, the 26-year-old completed parts of training with his colleagues for the first time since sustaining his injury. “I was with the boys for the warm-up and passing drills, and after that I worked individually,” Mittelstädt added. “The aim is to keep increasing the intensity individually this week so that I can return to full training with the team as soon as possible.”
The summer arrival has remained in contact with his team-mates throughout his spell on the sidelines: “That was very important for me, especially as I’m new here. I’ve settled in well here at VfB and felt at home quickly. That’s why it did me good to stay close to the team while I’ve been injured.”
Following the friendly victory over newly promoted Premier League side Sheffield United, the VfB No7 is looking forward to Saturday’s DFB Cup tie against TSG Balingen. “I’ve got a good feeling, the boys have made a good impression, they’re enjoying it and they’re very sharp in the tackles,” Mittelstädt concluded. “Although it’ll be a tough game we have the quality to progress. I’d like to be involved in the second round.”
