It is almost a year since RBL confirmed the signing of Benjamin Šeško, with his transfer made official on 7th August 2022.

The 20-year-old scored 16 goals in 30 league games during his final season at Salzburg and departed having won the Austrian Bundesliga title.

Benjamin, who prefers to go by his surname ‘Šeško’ has now been at RB Leipzig for around a week. At his first press conference on Thursday, he spoke about his first impressions of the club, his aims and gave some personal insight.

The talented attacker looked excited at his first press conference. Benjamin conducted the press conference in English, but at the end there was a first sample of his German. His favourite word? Schnitzel!

Benjamin Šeško on…

… his start at RB Leipzig

  • I have been taken in really well and feel at home. The first training sessions were intense. The level in training is already high and will get even better in the coming days when all the players have returned. I am really pleased about that. I am really excited to work with the team.”

… his decision to join RBL

  • RB Leipzig is a great club and exactly the right step for me to develop myself further. I will be training and playing here every day with very, very good players who I can still learn a lot from. I would like to reach the next level and continue to develop in a top league. I want to learn as much as possible here, mature as a player and, through that, help the club to reach their aims.”

… his aims at RBL

  • “The club has shown in previous years that they can win titles and hold their own against the absolute top teams, both nationally and internationally. I would like to help the club repeat these performances. We should put too much pressure on ourselves, though.”

Benjamin Šeško on…

… the player “Benjamin Šeško”

  • “I am a typical centre-forward and obviously like scoring goals. The more goals, the better. (laughs)

With my size, I can work well upfront as a target man and control the ball well to bring players around me into play, but I am also still young and know that I can still improve a lot in all areas.”

… Kevin Kampl

  • “I obviously know that he previously played for the Slovenia national team. I have followed the way his career has gone, but we weren’t in contact before my move to Leipzig. When I then came to the training centre to do performance testing on the first day, he came over to me immediately to have a conversation with me.

Kevko was an important point of contact for me straight away. He has been an important part of the club for a number of years. A young player, like me, can learn lots of things from such an experienced player.”

… Nicolas Seiwald

  • “We get on very well and spent a lot of time together in Salzburg – both on and off the pitch. It is obviously already a nice story that we are now both joining Leipzig together. He is a good player and was already captain in Salzburg. I am really pleased that he will be joining up with the team in the next few days.”

A real honour.
Benjamin Šeško on his shirt number

Benjamin Šeško on…

… the shirt number 30

  • “I really appreciate that Christian Müller has allowed me to take this shirt number. It’s a real honour to take over the shirt from a well-respected former RBL player.

I had good experiences with this shirt number in Salzburg, so it is a nice feeling to also be able to wear it at Leipzig as well.”

… comparisons to Erling Haaland

  • “Personally, I don’t think much of comparisons. We are completely different players. Erling is an absolutely world-class striker. I enjoy watching his games on TV and obviously pay attention to what he does in different situations in the game, but as I’ve already said: I am a completely different type of player.”

Benjamin Sesko on…

… his idol Zlatan Ibrahimović

  • “I have admired him since I was a child and loved watching him play football. How flexible he is, how high he can jump, his technical and shooting qualities – these have always impressed me. Zlatan was a brilliant footballer but also as a person, he is a role model for me. He is very relaxed, doesn’t take things too seriously, but also during his career he always had a completely professional attitude.”

… Slovenia as a sporting nation

  • Luka Dončić is one of the best basketball players in the world. I enjoy watching his games for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA. He is our hero in Slovenia.

Slovenians have also done really well in cycling in the last few years. Tadej Pogačar is currently challenging to win the Tour de France. I don’t watch the stages live, but I follow all the results via the ticker and have my fingers crossed.”
