VfB captain Wataru Endo was recently named skipper of the Japanese national team too. Having watched his country’s 6-0 win over El Salvador in the Kirin Cup last Thursday from the bench, along with VfB teammate Hiroki Ito, the 30-year-old finally got to lead out the Samurai Blue as captain against Peru on Tuesday. VfB’s Japanese duo then combined for the opening goal in the 22nd minute, with Endo’s pass setting up Ito, who curled the ball into the corner from distance for his first international goal. The match ended in a deserved 4-1 win over the South Americans.

Croatia reached the final of the UEFA Nations League last Wednesday thanks to a 4-2 win over Netherlands in the semis. Zlatko Dalić’s side then narrowly lost to Spain 5-4 on penalties in Sunday night’s final. VfB left-back Borna Sosa was an unused substitute in both games.

In Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, Serhou Guirassy and Guinea went down 2-1 against Egypt despite the VfB striker opening the scoring. Guinea are still in a promising second place in Group D with six points, behind Egypt on 12. That was followed by a 4-1 defeat in a friendly versus Brazil, but Guirassy again got the goal for his team.
