1. FC Union Berlin secured a 13th Bundesliga victory of the campaign at home to Europa League semi-finalists Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday. Urs Fischer’s side produced a magnificent first-half performance which saw goals from Taiwo Awoniyi and Grischa Prömel, which claimed all three points for the Köpenick club. Awoniyi pushed clear of the Frankfurt defence to shoot home on 17 minutes before Prömel’s wonderful long-range strike on 21 minutes made it two. A third goal was more likely but Union were unable to take advantage of those opportunities. Jens Petter Hauge was denied by Frederik Rönnow before the break, and that was as tense as it looked for the Danish goalkeeper through the second half.
VfL Wolfsburg will be able to count on Philipp Schulze for another three years, with the goalkeeper extending his contract with the Green-and-Whites through to 30 June 2026.
The victory means the team maintain their 100-percent record in the Bezirksliga: 16 wins from 16 games. The Black & Yellows thus solidified their position at the top of the table and took further strides towards promotion to the Landesliga. Their closest pursuers, TuS Germania Lohauserholz, are 15 points behind, albeit with a game in hand.

Two games within three days – and once again, 1. FSV Mainz 05 will be VfL’s opponents in the upcoming DFB-Pokal match after the 1-0 away defeat in the Bundesliga match last Saturday. Tuesday night at 20:45 CET, it’s time to take revenge at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion. In the run-up to the cup match, VfL head coach Thomas Reis answered journalists’ questions as usual.
“We’ll do everything we can to avoid relegation without relying on anything else,” said FCA head coach Enrico Maaßen ahead of the game. “We’re fully focused, but it’s also important that we are relaxed when approaching the game.” Due to their superior goal difference, a point in Gladbach would be enough to secure FCA’s Bundesliga status regardless of the results of VfB Stuttgart (vs. Hoffenheim) and VfL Bochum (vs. Leverkusen), who are playing at the same time.
On Thursday, Union Berlin took on a team in the UEFA Europa League who are a part of footballing heritage. In fact, in terms of footballing richness, Ajax is that aunt who comes from many generations of previous wealth. Union Berlin are the news boys on the block; and yet, in many ways, their heritage feels just as rich. What Ajax provides in terms of the historical names who wore their shirt, Union Berlin provides in terms of fans and heart. This club is a true working class story.
SC will be supported by 5,100 fans in Frankfurt, with the away end completely sold out. Nicolas Höfler will not feature on Saturday after his red card against Wolfsburg. “He wasn’t happy with the red card and will be replaced by Yannik Keitel this weekend,” revealed Streich. Despite his suspension, Höfler will still travel to Frankfurt upon Nils Petersen’s wish, who wants his long-term teammate with him as he plays his final game for the club.
