Four observations from Bayern Munich’s debacle against Mainz 05
Bayern Munich did not make their job any easier, and that’s the reason why they return to Munich with absolutely nothing. Sadio Mané’s opener (you read that right, it counted) proved to be worthless as Ludovic Ajorque, Leandro Barreiro, and Aaron Martin gave Bayern the sucker punch of a lifetime. What are the takeaways from today’s game?

Despondent Thomas Müller has no answers after Mainz 05 drubs Bayern Munich
Müller had one of his worst games of the season and the team lost 3-1, which pushed the Bavarians down to second place in the Bundesliga.
Ex Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann explains why he won’t go to Chelsea FC
Speaking to Sky Germany (via Fabrizio Romano), the former Bayern Munich coach apparently commented on the situation, saying, “To cancel something, you have to commit to something.” Cryptic, but it does get the point across. Fans will recall that, at Bayern, Nagelsmann was assured that he’d have complete control over transfers and the direction of the team as a whole, which included a long five-year contract. Perhaps the Blues were unwilling to concede those demands.
Did Uli Hoeneß do Bayern Munich a favor when they drew 1-1 against Hoffenheim?
“No, he didn’t,” Seb said flatly (via Twitter account @iMiaSanMia). “Uli knows that I always want to win. It’s not about wanting to win for FC Bayern, I want to win for VfB Stuttgart. We need the points, that’s our focus.”
Thomas Tuchel confirms Leroy Sane – Sadio Mane incident at Bayern Munich is resolved
Mane has since been fined and he was left out of the squad that drew TSG Hoffenheim 1-1 in the Bundesliga over the weekend despite Sane’s request for his teammate to not be punished at all.
Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel wary of Mainz 05
“It’s going to be very difficult. Mainz will prepare intensively for this game. They have their very own style. They are third in the second half table. It’s going to be a brutally difficult task. Playing in Mainz is always tough. We have to be ready,” Tuchel said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “It’s important how the team handles the situation. A lot of things have happened this season. The team has experienced a lot. I experienced in Paris myself how sad it is that the league title is taken for granted. It must not be taken for granted. We’re fighting for the title. We shouldn’t be ashamed of that. In Paris, too, at some point it was no longer enough to become champions. It was downplayed. There’s a lot of work involved in our day-to-day business. We have to fight in games and be ready.”
Joshua Kimmich is Bayern Munich’s new penalty taker
Kimmich’s well-taken penalty came in the 83rd minute; he sent Ederson flying the wrong way before striking down the center. But it came far too late — by then there was no chance to make up the remainder of the 4-1 deficit. And so the Bavarians could only rue their earlier missed opportunities.
