1. FSV Mainz 05

A summer test against Athletic Bilbao

The final tough test for the Zerofivers ahead of their season opener in the DFB-Pokal against Erzgebirge Aue is clear: The MEWA ARENA and Bo Svensson’s team will play host to Athletic Bilbao on Saturday July 23rd. The two 60-minute halves against La Liga’s eighth-place side last season was organised in cooperation with Onside Sports GmbH, and will kick off at 17:00 CEST.

1. FC Union Berlin

Union welcome Dublin’s Bohemians

Urs Fischer’s team suffered a first loss of the summer on Wednesday night against 2.Bundesliga side Eintracht Braunschweig. Immanuel Pherai scored a goal against the run of play in the 55th minute for the home side to take the win, despite the Köpenick club creating a number of clear goalscoring chances. Striker Jordan Siebatcheu made his debut for Union following his switch from Young Boys Bern in the wake of Taiwo Awoniyi’s departure to Nottingham Forest. The American-born striker immediately showed his danger but was unlucky not to open his account in the first half. After wins at Viktoria Berlin and Magdeburg, there were opportunities for rotation and game time – goalkeeper Lennart Grill was the only player to complete the full 90.

VfL Wolfsburg

Fifty-six days after Wolfsburg locked horns with TSG Hoffenheim in their final league match of 2022, the two teams faced each other once again on Friday in their first friendly of the new year. Man Utd set to reject Ronaldo demand as their summer spending impacts his future

Ten Hag has only afforded the Portugal international two Premier League starts this campaign with Ronaldo finding himself on the substitutes’ bench on a number of occasions.

Borussia Dortmund

Tretschok, Ricken and Kohler to the rescue

1-0 and 3-1 wins over AJ Auxerre in early 1997 were enough to book Borussia’s place in the penultimate round of the UEFA Champions League, despite the fact personnel problems had plagued the team all season. The build-up to the first leg of the semi-final clash with Manchester United was no exception, as coach Ottmar Hitzfeld had to make do without star strikers Karl-Heinz Riedle and Stéphane Chapuisat, not to mention Matthias Sammer (suspension), Jürgen Kohler and Julio César. In preparation for the tie, Hitzfeld spent long hours in front of his TV screen watching video recordings of the opposing team in action. In the modern game, video analysts examine every single detail of the opposition. 25 years ago, it was the head coach’s job, and the tools at his disposal were rather primitive. Though he was able to count on the services of a ”spy” (Gerd Löwel), who was dispatched to Manchester to gather intelligence.

SV Werder Bremen

Not one to be someone else

There were a number of disappointed faces at the training ground on Thursday morning as Werder Bremen striker Niclas Füllkrug trained individually, rather than with the team. Many fans were hoping for an autograph or a photo with the forward, who has become more and more popular among fans after scoring six goals in six games for the Germany national team.

VfL Bochum 1848

A point in the bank and Zoller’s back!

Another impressive performance! VfL scored one point against Champions League candidates Bayer Leverkusen – which makes a total of 36 points up to now. It was a game at eye level with Bochum having the better chances to score the winner. Even though VfL were quite fortunate when Diaby “missed“ a penalty. In front of a 25,000 crowd Simon Zoller celebrated his comeback in the sold-out Vonovia Ruhrstadion.

FC Augsburg

Berisha called up to Germany squad

Berisha, who has scored eight goals and recorded four assists in the Bundesliga this season, follows in the footsteps of Uli Biesinger, Helmut Haller and current teammates André Hahn and Felix Uduokhai to become the fifth FC Augsburg player to be called up to the Germany national team. Former FCA man and current Frankfurt player Philipp Max was named in the squad shortly after leaving the club to join PSV Eindhoven.

Bayern Munich 6 – 2 Mainz: Bild player ratings

Here’s how Bild scored the action:

Hertha Berlin

“Picking ourselves up again”

Notwithstanding the busy schedule, it has been an eventful few days for Hertha. Marco Richter, however, is looking to the future after the defeat to Union at the weekend. “We have to put everything negative out of our minds and pick ourselves up again,” explained the number 23. Sandro Schwarz also made it clear that his side need to focus on the upcoming tasks as Hertha kicked off their training week on Tuesday afternoon: “We had a meeting about how we can deal with this situation. The simplest thing to do is to take care of things together out on the pitch and uphold the trust amongst ourselves,” said the head coach.
