Switzerland defeat Hungary in opening EUROs game

The Swiss national team kicked off their EURO 2024 campaign with a 3-1 win over Hungary in Cologne. Gladbach centre-half Nico Elvedi was an unused substitute, but former Foals made a key contribution to the victory.

Switzerland, who will face Germany in EURO 2024 Group A, grabbed a well-deserved victory in their opening game of the tournament. Murat Yakin’s side were in control from the off against Hungary, and were rewarded for a strong start when Kwadwo Duah scored the first goal of the game in the 12th minute. Michael Aebischer doubled the Swiss lead on the stroke of half-time.

Although Nico Elvedi remained on the bench throughout, two former Gladbach stars – Yann Sommer and Granit Xhaka – started, and Breel Embolo came on as a second-half substitute. Embolo went on to ensure Switzerland emerged with all three points with a stoppage-time strike. Swiss nerves had been jangling for much of the second half after Hungary’s Barnabas Varga pulled one back for the Magyars with 25 minutes to go.

Both sides will be in action on Wednesday (19th June), with Hungary taking on Germany at 18:00 CEST, before Switzerland face Scotland at 21:00 CEST.
