Copa America: USMNT defeated in second group game
Joe Scally and the United States are facing an early exit from the Copa America after suffering a 2-1 defeat against Panama in their second game of the group stage.
The Stars and Stripes went into the game as clear favourites, but their job was made significantly more difficult after a moment of madness saw striker Timothy Weah seemingly direct a punch at Panama defender Roderick Miller after just 15 minutes, for which he was unsurprisingly dismissed. Although the US, for whom Joe Scally once again played the full 90 minutes, took the lead shortly afterwards through Folarin Balogun (22’), a quick-fire response from César Blackman drew Panama level (26’), and they eventually secured a winner through José Fajardo (83’). The USA’s hopes of progressing now hang by a thread, and they will need a positive result against Uruguay in their final group match if they are to progress.
